Rongai Route

About
this Tour

Area to Visit

Rongai Gate, Simba Camp, Second Cave Camp, Kikelewa Camp, Mawenzi Tarn Camp, Uhuru Peak

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route, the only trail that approaches the mountain from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border. This route is less crowded and offers a quieter, more gradual ascent through varied and often drier landscapes.

The Rongai Route is ideal for trekkers seeking a steady climb with excellent views of Mawenzi Peak and a peaceful trekking experience. Its gentle gradients and reliable weather conditions make it a strong option during the rainy seasons. The route joins the Marangu trail for the final summit push, leading to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. All nights are spent in tents with full support from a professional mountain crew.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: 750 m (1,950 m to 2,650 m)
Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast, drive to Rongai Gate for registration before starting the trek through cultivated land and forest. The trail is wide and gentle, offering a relaxed introduction to the climb. As you ascend, the forest becomes quieter and more natural, allowing time to settle into a steady walking rhythm. You arrive at Simba Camp in the afternoon, where you rest, hydrate, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: ~6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: 350 m (2,650 m to 3,000 m)
Habitat: Heath and Moorland

The trail climbs gradually out of the forest into open heathland, with clearer views of Kibo Peak ahead. The landscape becomes more expansive, and the air cooler as altitude increases. Walking at a comfortable pace, you reach Second Cave Camp by early afternoon. The rest of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and allowing your body to adapt to the altitude.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: ~9 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 600 m (3,000 m to 3,600 m)
Habitat: Moorland

Today’s hike continues at a steady pace across open moorland beneath the slopes of Mawenzi Peak. The route becomes quieter and more remote, with wide views across the northern plains. As the trail steepens slightly, you move higher into a rugged landscape before reaching the sheltered Kikelewa Camp. The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization.

The trail climbs more steeply today, entering the alpine zone where vegetation becomes sparse. You ascend toward Mawenzi Tarn, set dramatically beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. The stark beauty of the surroundings creates a true high-altitude atmosphere. The afternoon is spent resting, taking short acclimatization walks, and preparing for the summit attempt.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: ~14 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,780 m ascent / 1,200 m descent
Habitat: Alpine Desert → Arctic Zone

A very early start begins the summit ascent, joining the Marangu Route near Kibo Hut.
